Substack. WordPress. Blogger. Medium. Tumblr. Social media in general, all genres, brands, etc.. Another blog may be the thing the world needs least. A blog is almost certainly the last place anyone these days will (or should) look to find answers to life’s persistent questions. Yet here we are.
I decided to start this blog for one reason: to fight Resistance. According to Steven Pressfield, “Resistance” is a negative force keeping us from fulfilling our creative dreams. But please don’t take this literally. It’s nothing external, and it isn’t insurmountable. It’s a label for habitually manufacturing excuses, of avoiding the proverbial arena and surrendering to fear.
From a young age, exercising creativity meant exposing myself to seemingly unbearable risk. A series of bad experiences coupled with a weak emotional constitution taught me to avoid putting myself out there. This anxiety ruled my life for decades, but as I navigate middle age and reflect on its influence over time, the harder it is to permit as a modus operandi.
Today, I decided enough is enough. It’s time to get over myself and just do it, and “it” involves the written word as a medium. I hold no illusions about my prospects and fully expect to labor in obscurity until and unless I stumble on something of value to someone else. It could happen.
So, to anyone reading this, welcome! I hope you find the subject matter here useful and interesting. In any case, please share your thoughts.
